I hadn't been there long before I had some proper friend requests, and I could also get current Catholic news and events from pages I followed.
Then the push to make Same sex marriage (?) legal in the U.S.A. occured, and people began posting all kinds of rainbow images and papal flags over their avatars to show where they stood on the matter.
I noticed a few more creative types were making up their own icons, one showed a stick man vomiting a rainbow. " Ha! Ha!" the comments said and " thumbs up!" Clearly the inventor was sick of hearing about the rainbow flag and making that clear in a picture.
This rainbow bandwagon is not yet over of course, Doritos have made a multicoloured snack which for a 10 dollar donation to their cause, one can actually shove the colours of the rainbow in ones face! ( so to speak)
If the little stick man felt nauseated before, I wonder what effect this snack with saturated food colouring would have on him? We could end up with a "Jackson Pollock." avatar...(see imitation painting below with apologies to Mr. Pollock!)
All of this brings me to a personal conclusion; that paring down our churches and losing much of its symbolic imagery has had a negative side effect. With more positive Catholic imagery around, its possible we would better understand our faith today, and not feel so threatened by garish flags.
The bow in the heavens was not created to suppress us, but to remind us that whatever the world can throw at us, our hope has an eternal dimension, because God is faithful and always keeps his promises.
